Turning Sustainability Data into a Competitive Advantage with Monitizer

As sustainability becomes a key factor in winning new business, foundries are under growing pressure to provide accurate emissions data alongside competitive pricing. For MAT Group, one of the world's leading casting manufacturers, digitalisation is playing a crucial role in turning this challenge into an opportunity.
At the heart of MAT Group's sustainability journey is Monitizer, Norican’s industrial IoT platform, which is helping the company's EURAC foundry in Poole, UK measure emissions, optimise performance, and prepare for future Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments.
— Luke Batter - Process Development Manager at MAT GroupCustomer interest in emissions has increased hugely, even in the last six months...Our own sustainability initiatives began some years ago but now we are definitely being driven by our customers. We plan to commit to Science Based Targets in the near future.
Sustainability Data is Becoming a Business Necessity
Customer expectations around emissions transparency have evolved rapidly. Today, foundries are increasingly required to demonstrate the carbon footprint of their products before they can even compete for new contracts.
For MAT Group, this means being able to accurately calculate and report carbon emissions at both plant and product level. Many RFQs now require detailed carbon footprint data, making emissions reporting a critical element of the sales process.
"To be able to quote for new business now, you have to know your product carbon footprint," says Luke. "All our largest customers will not accept a new RFQ without it. One of our largest customers has said that sustainability is just as important as purchase price, although they still want the lowest price per part too."
Monitizer Delivers the Data Foundation
To meet these growing requirements, MAT Group relies on Monitizer | DISCOVER to provide real-time visibility into foundry operations and energy consumption.
The platform already enables the Poole facility to monitor energy usage per tonne of production through intuitive digital dashboards. This level of transparency allows the team to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements while building a robust foundation for emissions reporting.
Looking ahead, MAT is working towards an even more advanced use of the platform: real-time carbon measurement across every stage of the production process.
DISCOVER’s dashboards already report their energy consumption per ton in real time. "What we're aiming for is a real-time carbon metric for every sub-process and a Monitizer digital dashboard that gives us a per-batch emissions figure for each product as it's produced," says Luke.
By transforming operational data into actionable sustainability insights, Monitizer helps foundries move from estimating emissions to actively managing and reducing them.
Partners for a profitable, sustainable future
While many manufacturers have made progress measuring Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Scope 3 remains one of the biggest obstacles to comprehensive carbon reporting.
For MAT Group, collecting supplier emissions data is an ongoing process. The company is prioritising a highly accurate baseline before setting formal reduction targets.
"We need to walk before we can run," says Luke. "We want to calculate our base emissions very accurately so we can then set targets correctly."
This data-first approach aligns closely with Monitizer's philosophy: reliable sustainability decisions begin with reliable operational data.
From Measurement to Optimisation
The value of Monitizer extends beyond reporting. MAT Group is also exploring Monitizer | PRESCRIBE, the AI-driven process optimisation solution designed to identify opportunities for operational improvements and lower resource consumption.
Combined with initiatives such as green sand reclamation and renewable electricity adoption, digital process optimisation can help foundries reduce emissions while maintaining profitability and competitiveness.

Building a More Sustainable and Profitable Future
As manufacturers increasingly seek suppliers that can demonstrate lower-carbon production, sustainability is becoming a significant differentiator.
"All of our customers are looking at reshoring some or all of their casting production closer to where their products are assembled and sold," says Luke. "Emissions are definitely a big part of what's driving that."
For foundries looking to gain a competitive edge, access to accurate, real-time production and emissions data is becoming essential. Through solutions such as Monitizer, MAT Group is building the visibility required to meet customer expectations, support future SBTi commitments, and unlock new business opportunities.
By helping foundries capture, analyse and act on production data, Monitizer is enabling manufacturers like MAT Group to turn sustainability reporting into a strategic advantage—supporting lower emissions, smarter operations, and stronger commercial performance.
"Norican is quite far along in its emissions journey and its experience of SBT will be really helpful," continues Luke. "Data is key and at the moment, Norican is the one with the most emissions data. We already have a close relationship with DISA, Monitizer, Simpson and Wheelabrator and I expect that to grow further as we commit to SBT."
